Mon Jun 11 '18 Announcement from iGUANEYE Jungle : barefoot comfort everywhere

Dear Backers,

To ensure the best quality possible for the Jungle, I have chosen to work with the best mold maker and injection companies here in Portugal. However, their manifests are full, and we have been delayed. They are running a lot of big projects for bigger brands. I have met with the boss of the mold factory several times over the last few months and they have agreed to find a place for the Jungle project in the schedule. This past Friday the first molds have been delivered.

EVA mold for Light sole :
I was at the injection factory for the delivery of the mold and the first injection test. The mold is designed with 4 cavities and produces two pairs for each injection round. The cavities are much smaller than the final part. This is because the EVA foam pops out of the mold as soon as it opens (160% expansion). Then the sole cools and retracts by 20% on a wood form to ensure it keeps the correct shape.

There are some minor problems with this mold. The injection canal is not at a good place, and it is leaving a visible mark on the outside of the sole. I have asked the mold maker to adjust the canal to a non-visible area.  In addition to the cosmetic adjustments, some air bubbles can't escape during the injection and build up on the rear plug, creating additional defects. An air canal will need have to be drilled to release the bubbles from the cavities. Finally, the wood forms (shoe last) are not  sufficiently stopping the retraction of the hot sole coming straight from the mold (instead of a 39, we have a 37). So the wood form will need a top part that can perfectly form the correct size while cooling.

Even though I still don't have the final main bodies with me, I have been walking the whole weekend (in rainy Porto) to test the production Light sole (I just cut some holes on the prototype main body, the one you saw in the video). The Light soles are very, very light and most of all they are soft and incredibly comfy. Yes, the Jungle is really the most comfortable shoe EVER!

Elastomer mold for Main body :
Main bodies will be injected in another injection factory. I am traveling there tomorrow to inspect everything and finally assemble the two final parts of the Jungle Light (main body and Light sole). The factory received the mold Friday; they have sent me initial pictures, and everything seems to be okay. Tomorrow the final material will be tested.

Cork mold for the Lux sole :

The mold will be delivered tomorrow. I will go check as soon as production test is scheduled.

Rubber mold for the Lux outsole :
Only after getting the first cork+leather sole, the mold maker will be able to precisely determine the contraction and, from that, craft the mold for the rubber outsole of the Lux sole.

The following planning is the tough part of this update. I know some backers wanted to go on holidays with their Jungles. It kills me to say it, but this most likely will not be possible. Crowdfunding is not as swift as ordering from stock. Going from dream to reality is not easy, but I am so happy to make the iGUANEYE Jungle a reality. Being able to finally experience just how light and comfy the test Light sole is has given me so much hope in the face of these setbacks.

The revised time line is as follows :

10-20 of June : first size 4 molds test and modification until final approval
20 of June to 25 of July : All molds collection crafting (30 molds + 50 wood forms)
25 of July to 20 of August : Production
20-31 of August : Packaging and shipping

I am sorry for the disappointment and frustration you may feel reading this updated timeline. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or have a question that I have not addressed. I am committed to doing my best to make you the best product possible. It may not feel like it, but we are almost there. I am excited to be able to share some picture and videos of the production process in the coming weeks.

Cheers.
Olivier/iGUANEYE

Hey, backers.

We hope you guys have a great weekend, as we mentioned, the bags are all by hand-made, so there's a little bit delay due to the complicated craft, we will send them out in July. Sorry guys! We're really sorry about the delay, this is the first time our team trying to manufacture something totally hand-made, we did learn a lot from that part. Thank you guys, thank you very much for the understanding and support! Can’t wait to send out all the rewards!

Best,

NIID

Mon Jun 11 '18 Announcement from 3 COIL World's smallest folding Knife & Multi-Tool

$

This is how we will be packaging the crane knife.  It will be sent in a plastic test tube.  Its a small injection molded stopper in 2 parts. For extra security - shipping around the world, we will drop in a foam ball. As the knife is inserted into the tube, the blade sticks in the ball so it wont shake around.

This was an early prototype using real cork.  It did not look good and was not in keeping with the clean design of the knife.

Puna Blade attachment

We mentioned in the last update that we would go into more detail regarding the changes to the blade attachment. Basically, the block has increased in size.  The bolts we used in the original prototype were tiny in size. We needed to beef up the screws so we could tighten the blade onto the handle with more force.

The original prototype had a flat attachment block. There was the potential of the blade breaking away with large forces.  The first thing we did was add a small pin at the front of the block. This would lock the front of the blade in place and reduce the turning forces when the user presses hard on the blade.

The pin is the perfect diameter to nestle into the front slot of the blade.

This brings us to the larger slot at the back of the blade. This is the reason for the larger attachment block.  We have used larger bolts (M2.5) that fit exactly in the slot. This stops any movement or wobble, and the larger thread allows us to tighten down harder.

Here you can see the 3 attachment points.  Perfect in size for a strong attachment.

We are thinking to give an extra set of Allen key bolts for the blade attachment, as well as the flat head bolts.  The micro screwdriver is tiny in size and its designed for the flat head bolts. Its tiny size makes it difficult to do up the flat head bolts with any force.  Its holds the blade in place just fine,  but if you want to go really tight - then the Allen key bolts give you that option - using an Allen key wrench ( not provided )

Final samples....as soon as these are in ( end of week) we will upload a video showing the completed puna and crane. We will send the video the day they arrive, and we can then work out shipping dates.  Speak to you all at the end of the week.

Mon Jun 11 '18 Announcement from Moona - Improve your sleep with temperature

Dear backers,

We're happy to share with you some exciting news!

As you may know from our last update, we are in the process of manufacturing the Engineering Validation Test (EVT) prototypes. We will run a lot of tests on those over the next two weeks. Our next update will be dedicated to this process.

We focused today on our app and the team. You’ll find hardware and factory pictures as well, we couldn’t resist!

Funding

We closed our seed round with international investors a few weeks ago.

This will help us go faster and think long-term.

Team

Thanks to this additional investment, we've been able to strengthen the team again!

Please welcome Laurent, a firmware engineer, Baptiste, who will intern with us this summer to work on graphic design, and Nicolas, who will lead marketing.

Edgar has been back with us (for a few months now) to further develop our mobile app after finishing his studies.

Edgar, Baptiste, Coline, Nicolas and Laurent

We moved! Still at Agoranov, our incubator in the middle of Paris, but we now have our dedicated office on the second floor:

Edgar and Laurent hard at work

The Moona App

It currently has two main functions: controlling the device and giving you key insights on your sleep.

You'll be able to set up the alarm clock, control the temperatures you want during the night or activate your Moona for a refreshing nap.

Thanks to our motion sensor at the edge of the pad, we can analyse the length and quality of your sleep.

The product has two additional sensors within the bedside device to measure your sleeping environment. One measures ambient temperature plus humidity and the other measures light. Those factors play a huge role on sleep.

We know sleep is very personal. There’s no silver bullet or secret recipes working for everyone. Giving personalized sleep tips is indispensable and collecting this data is what makes it possible for us.

We’re still tweaking the app UI/UX to make it even more simple

If you have any comment or question on the app or UX, we would be happy to hear them !

Product

In addition to mechanical optimisations, we are doing a lot of life tests where we put each component in extreme situations to make sure they hold up over time.

We’ve been twisting tubes and parts, stress testing our pump (heat, water lift, making it run in all types of waters and liquids…), key components, our pillow pad etc.

testing the pump

We run the life tests with different liquids. Here, milk.

Vivatech

Very happy to meet some of you at the event two weeks ago! It was hard to compete for attention with the presence of Emmanuel Macron, Mark Zuckerberg and all the great speakers but our booth was constantly busy :)

We still managed to get a few breaks for pictures:

Nicolas and Coline

What's next on hardware?

Testing on EVT prototypes (hardware and electronics)

Design Validation Test and mold production

We’re finalizing our branding strategy, if you have any great idea, please share!

For example, we’re working on a brand mascot. What do you think it should be?

---

We’ve made this update less tech-focused this month.

What do you think? What do you want to hear from us?

Feel free to reach out anytime using FacebookTwitter or email (hello@getmoona.com)

Thanks again for your support,

I'll be presenting some of the work-in-progress (new material) at Assembly Birmingham this Friday at Eastside Projects in Digbeth. The event itself sounds fantastic so come along if you happen to be free: www.a-n.co.uk/assembly/birmingham/

I'll be talking a bit about my filmmaking process and why it's taking so damn long!

I'll also be saying a few words about Alan Clawley who sadly passed away at the end of April. Alan campaigned tirelessly to save the Central Library and he has supported my film in countless ways so it's a great shame that he'll never get to see it.

Mon Jun 11 '18 Announcement from Historic Bobby Bumps cartoons on Blu-ray & DVD!

$
0
0

At long last, one of the major items in this project which has caused its overall delay throughout 2018 is finally nearing completion. In the time since our animator colleague Maira Vergara began recreating/compositing replacement frames for footage that was missing in Bobby Bumps' Last Smoke, she has successfully created well over 100 replacement frames that help complete important cycles, gags, or other aspects of the film that would seem awkward or senseless without this reconstruction. We are truly grateful to Maira for her volunteered efforts.

A couple weeks back, we calculated that there were less than 50 frames to recreate in order to effectively complete a presentable film. At the same time, however, Maira's volunteership had to be put on hiatus for personal reasons. I've since discussed these remaining tasks with our main video editor on this project, David Grauman, who hopes to save the day. This sort of reconstructing/reanimation of damaged and missing frames is normally a bit beyond the scope of his editing work, although a brief 8 frame sequence that I gave him as a test came out fine. We're both hoping that he is successful in completing the rest of these frames relatively soon, and with usable results.

I'm also happy to announce that as we've all waited patiently for a conclusion to the Last Smoke saga, project participant David Gerstein was able to have a historian colleague of his, Eric Costello, make a completely unexpected contribution to this project. Mr. Costello owns a rare collection of Earl Hurd political humor illustrations from 1908, and he is in the process of writing descriptive captions (and possibly an informative introduction) for a gallery of roughly 12-15 of these images to appear in the 'extras' section of the Bobby Bumps set, with Eric's permission. It will be important for viewers to see more of Hurd's early evolution as a newspaper cartoonist, and I'm thankful to Eric for this previously unplanned aspect of the project.

Steve Stanchfield is ready for disc mastering and authoring as soon as the final film and extras galleries are handed over to him. None of us can wait to see all of this in its final form!

In the meantime, I'll share another teaser...two slides that will appear in the Behind the Scenes extras:

Until soon, and sincerely yours,

TJS
